Gotu Kola (Centella asiatica) is an exceptional plant with a long history. In the tropical regions of Asia, it prefers to grow in moist, shady locations and is characterised by its small, rounded leaves. Also known as Indian pennywort, Gotu Kola has been an established part of traditional Asian herbalism for centuries. It is particularly highly regarded in Indian Ayurveda and Sri Lanka.
What makes Gotu Kola special lies in its leaves: they contain a variety of natural plant compounds, including the characteristic triterpenes asiaticoside and madecassoside. These compounds are among the most interesting constituents of the plant and are also the subject of scientific research. Gotu Kola also provides other secondary plant compounds such as flavonoids. It is precisely this distinctive composition that makes this inconspicuous green plant an interesting subject of research.
Did you know that in parts of Asia, Gotu Kola is not only valued as a traditional plant but is also part of the diet? In Sri Lanka, for example, its fresh leaves are used to prepare Gotu Kola Sambol, a flavourful herb salad with grated coconut.
