Visual disturbances during menopause

31/03/2026

Visual disturbances that occur during menopause represent a complex health phenomenon caused by multiple factors. These disturbances often appear suddenly and can sometimes be accompanied by symptoms such as dizziness. One of the main causes of dizziness during menopause is the declining production of female sex hormones, particularly estrogen. This hormonal decrease can affect the sense of balance in the inner ear. In addition, blood pressure fluctuations, which occur more frequently during menopause, can also contribute to visual disturbances.

Another significant cause of visual problems during menopause is dry eyes. During menopause, the concentration of estrogens, including estradiol and estriol, decreases significantly. Estriol is a hormone that moisturizes the body’s mucous membranes. A lack of estriol therefore leads to dry mucous membranes, including the eyes. Additionally, testosterone levels decrease during menopause, and testosterone influences the composition of the tear film.

Recommendations for managing visual disturbances during menopause:

Successfully managing visual disturbances during menopause requires a targeted approach to identify the underlying causes. If dizziness is associated with visual problems and is due to increased fluid and electrolyte loss from hot flashes, adequate hydration is crucial. Special electrolyte solutions from the pharmacy can also be considered. If dizziness is caused by blood pressure fluctuations, rosemary and ginger may be considered as potential aids for blood pressure regulation.

For those whose main issue is dry eyes, proper hydration both internally and externally is essential. Nutrition should focus on omega-3 fatty acids, as they can positively influence circulation in the body and thus contribute to the health of mucous membranes.
